Good afternoon,

Today on the 5th of December the Christmas Market opens in Gdańsk. The Market is located in Targ Węglowy (Kohlenmarkt). Along with that this is an official start of Christmas in Gdańsk. Lights will be turned on. Father Christmas (Weihnachtsmann) will go through ul. Długa (Langgasse).

I am going to visit this event and take some pictures for you and my family. I guess every city is beautiful at this time. This will show you how it looks in Gdańsk.

Yes, really overcrowded streets!
Well, it's the first day and people perhaps waited impatiently for the opening of the Christmas Market.
Has it been opened by a festival procession? Because of the costumed girls, I ask.
And also the ships are decorated...a funny idea.

Wish you and your family great joy when visiting the Christmas Market again- perhaps it will not be so full of people later on.

Ja, die Straßen sind ja wirklich überfüllt!
Nun, es ist der erste Tag und die Menschen haben vielleicht schon ungeduldig auf die Eröffnung des Weihnachtmarktes gewartet.
Findet zur Eröffnung ein Festumzug statt? Ich frage wegen der Mädchen in den Kostümen.
Und sogar die Schiffe werden geschmückt...eine lustige Idee.

Ich wünsch Dir und Deiner Familie noch viel Freude bei nächsten Weihnachtsmarktbesuchen- vielleicht ist es später dann nicht mehr so voll.

Thanks Patrick for the pics. During the night from the 5th to the 6th of December, came St Nikolaus and filled iur shoes. We children were polishing and cleaning them the night before and lined them up on the window sill. Theyu were full of sweete the next morning and I never forgot that. My boys did the dame here in Australia and now Stephen is continuing with that custom. Seby and Rachel, did not only clean their schoes but put Mum's and Dad's out, before the door, too. Danke Patrick für die schönen Fotos, auch wenige Fotos können einen weihnachtlichen Eindruck vermitteln. Als ich Kind war, gab es kein beleuchtetes Danzig, denn es war Krieg. Aber wir hatten ein schönes Weihnachtsfest für Kinder der Schichau-Mitarbeiter (Schichau war eine große Werft in Danzig) mit Geschenken, einem Weihnachtsmann und einem Theaterstück. Daran kann ich mich noch sehr gut erinnern. Eine schöne Adventszeit wünscht Ada

Dear Ada ! You mentioned the theatre and immediately are the memories flooding back. During the Christmas Period, the Staatstheater fuehrte immer Maerchen auf fuer uns Kinder. Jedes Jahr waren wir dort und mit roten Backen und aufgeregt, schauten wir all die Stuecke an. Jedes Jahr gab es etwas anderes, von 'Scheewittchen' zum 'Dornroeschen', aber nie werde ich die 'Schneekoenigin' vergessen. Liebe Gruesse von der Feli

Please can you tell us why the current Christmas market in Gdansk is open daily only until 19 o'clock?
This is unusually early for us in Germany. Our most important Christmas markets are open nightly: until 20 o’clock (Rostock), 20-21 o’clock (Christkindlmarkt on the Marienplatz in Munich and the Mainzer Christmasmarket), usually 21 or 22 o’clock (Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, Striezelmarkt Dresden; Hamburg, Lübeck, Cologne, Frankfurt am Main) or partly even longer (Berlin).

bitte, kannst Du uns wohl sagen, warum der aktuelle Weihnachtsmarkt in Danzig täglich nur bis 19 Uhr geöffnet ist?
Das ist für uns in Deutschland ungewöhnlich früh.
Unsere bedeutendsten Märkte haben abends geöffnet: bis 20 Uhr (Rostock), 20 bis 21 Uhr: Christkindlmarkt in München, Mainzer Weihnachtsmarkt, meistens 21 bis 22 Uhr Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt, Striezelmarkt Dresden; Hamburg, Lübeck, Köln, Frankfurt/Main), oder z.T. noch länger....(Berlin).

War das schon immer so? Oder gab es früher keinen Weihnachtsmarkt in Danzig?

wenn ich das richtig sehe, hat der Weihnachtsmarkt alltags bis 20:00 Uhr geoeffnet und am Wochenende bis 21:00 Uhr.
Aber ich bin heute abend dort und werde mal sehen, ob es stimmt, was ich hier gefunden habe

Dein Avatar habe ich erkannt und es macht mich neugierig ob Du wohl noch in Zoppot lebst.
Meine Ehefrau ist in Zoppot geboren, sie hat im Januar 1945 ihre Heimat verlassen.
Gerne würde ich von Dir aktuelles über Zoppot (Sopot) erfahren.

Mein Pfälzer Grossvater hat in Zoppot seine Danziger Frau gefunden, aber das ist schon lange her.
