I hope that at least some of you know English because, unfortunately, I cannot write in German.
I am student of Culture Studies at the University of Gdańsk, but the main reason I write to you is a project which has been held in Wróblewo since May this year. The project known as 'The Painted Wings of Wroblewo' is an educational undertaking. The main aim of the project is to educate children and adolescents from Wroblewo (and the neighbourhood) and to help them to develop their knowledge about local history. All the workshops and activities are thematically linked with the paintings known as 'the Altar from Sperlingsdorf' which were brought to the village in 1591. The whole project apart from educational branch involves also research which is connected with the recent history of the altar. We have still some blank spaces or unknown details, so I was thinking - maybe some of you know or has ever heard something more and decides to be so kind to share his/her knowledge.
Below you'll find some questions which we still ask ourselves:
1. Were the wings of the altar displayed in the chapel?
2. We know that in 1930s the altar disappeared from the village to be renovated (maybe several times). It was back in the chapel in 1941. Did all four wings come back?
3. When did the inscription (saying that the paintings were donated by Ursula Wennenpfenni in 1591) disappear from the paintings? Was it after renovation?
4. Why in Zirkwitz's book are there only photos of front parts and no back parts with Saints?
5. Has anyone ever read the book by prof. Drost in which he describes the paintings (what does he say there?)
6. What did happen to the paintings when the war was coming to the end? Were they taken from the chapel? Where? By whom?
7. And what did happen to them between 1945 and 1962 (in 1962 three out of four appeared in the National Museum in Gdansk)?
8. What has happened to the fourth wing with 'The Miracle with the Wand' (Zirkwitz calls it 'Die Werbung') and St. John?
9. Does anybody have idea how this painting of St. John looked like? Any photos?
We will be very grateful for every piece of information. Even if you don't know the answer for any of these questions but you know anything about the altar - share it with us, please. It will be very valuable. We really want to discover those details.
